Would it provide better cooling if I were to remove the duct on my sig machine and install a normal P4 HSF and a strong 9.2cm fan in the back? Corrent setup is a 9.2cm (weak) in the back ducted to a passive large aluminium HS.

Yep You might even consider a non-normal (i.e. non-stock) cooler
Big Typhoon or if you need smaller, the Silent Tower

Do I really need that much for a non-OC'd Northwood? I could also replace the back fan and keep duct. Already have applied AS5 after 2yrs with the stock thermal goop.

Personally I dont think it's that much overkill (although i do recognize that it IS overkill) ... what's your budget constraint?

TMD fans are very dust-sensitive, not conducive to the way I use my comp. The Masscool isn't really great from reviews. What do you think of http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835185111

Not a big fan of it myself; given that option id get a Polo735 and hook it up to a fancontroller (included) if noise was an issue; then again with a low budget, not much we can really pick from.
