Dell Inspiron 5100 Ram Trouble

I just got a secondhand Dell Inspiron 5100. It's about four years old from my understanding and had only 256MB (ddr 266 mhz) of memory in it. So I went to newegg and purchased 1gbx2 SO DDR 266 and when I plug the ram in, the computer turns on but it doesn't boot windows. I just put one of them in and it still doesn't boot. It boots just fine with the old ram and I'm a little pissed that I spent 40 bucks a piece on ram I can't use.

Can anyone help me so I don't have to ship this shit back?
 
It just booted with one of the 1gb sticks and the 256 stick.

I will try with the other one also and see.

And it works with the other 1gb stick and the 256.


Is it possible that my motherboard or power supply can't handle that much?

I just reloaded a fresh windows xp on it a few weeks ago if that would change anything
