Dell Inspiron 530 Disk Read Error

I may very well be in the wrong forum. I am out of my element when it comes to Dell. I am a web applications developer by trade but I also do system design, system builds, service and repair ....I'm kind of a swiss army knife, but can certainly get out of my element with with some service and repair stuff.

I have reached a system I just can't decipher. I have a Dell Inspiron 530 in for repair and upon boot it gives a "Disk read error has occurred". I shut it down and attempted to boot from a Win XP Bootable CD(the OS on the system is Win XP) and I get a new error "Bootable Device Not Found Press Enter to Retry"...so I try again from a flashdrive and same error. I can't get any peripheral in the machine to attempt to boot anything. I've swapped out SATA cables for known working cables, swapped in a known working CD Drive, jumped the CMOS, pulled the battery, jumped it again....I want to say that it's a bad MoBo but the SATA controllers acknowledge that the drives exist....but won't allow me to access any of them.

advice please?

Thanks

Sounds like a blank/bad HDD - do you have a spare to test? Also, how did you try booting to the CD - just put it in and turned the system on, or did you change boot order in BIOS?

Or, if you want to verify the drive is 'good' (info on it) you could just Slave it out to another system and see if it is detected by Windows.

A bad HDD wouldn't explain why no other peripheral will boot.

Before working on a system I always change the boot order so that HDD is last. So CD-Rom was before HDD...I will ultimately slave it to another system in an effort to at the very least save the data
