dell inspiron 530s RAM

I may be going to upgrade the RAM in my dell inspiron 530s to 3 or 4gb, well I probably will be. Before i go and buy it, i decided i would use the 2x 512mb RAM boards from my brothers computer, when i went to fit them into mine along with the existing 2x 512mb RAM, they didn't fit. My computer can take upto 4gb RAM (4x 1gb), but two sockets*(not sure if thats what they're called) appear to be smaller, (the two with the black clips). if i need a different type of RAM board, which one do i need?

thanks

The inspiron uses ddr2 memory, it has 4 slots with a max memory of 4gb. What memory does your brothers computer have? I would say his memory is either ddr, ddr3 or pc100/133, which will not work in your pc.

Technically you don't want to be mixing different brands/speed of memory as issues could arise. You would want all sticks to be the same brand and speed/timings.

My Brothers pc is identical. I also tried swapping the ram in mine over to the different looking socket and wouldn't fit either.

If its the same machine as yours then the memory should be the same type. Memory can only be installed one way and there shouldn't be different sized slots in the machine. Is it possible for you to post pics of everything?

The memory can only go in one way, you have to watch where the notch is in the memory and match it up to the slot. The slots aren't different so you must be putting them in wrong.
