New to the forumso I thought I would say hi and talk about my upgrade.

Now I know the Dell Inspiron 6000 wasn't known for being fast. Since it came original with 512mb of memory ram and that is the minimum requirement for Windows Xp. So I just got done installing 2x 1gb giving me 2gb of ram now.

It definitely helped speed things up quite a bit. I can actually play some games that it wouldn't before. Is there anything else I can do to increase my laptops performance?

Somebody brought me an Inspiron 6000 yesterday asking me what I could do to speed it up. The thing is running XP Pro and has only 256M of RAM! Holy cow is it slow. With only a browser running with a single tab open, there is only about 40M of free RAM, talk about being starved for memory.

I did a virus scan, general cleanup, defragged the 40G hdd and eliminated some unneeded programs from running at startup. It runs a little better now but still slow.

The person bought this thing used (don't know how much they paid) and I'm hesitant to tell them to throw much in the way of money at it since it's around 8 years old and not worth upgrading. I am recommending to them to upgrade the RAM to 1G (I think 2G is overkill for them). EDIT: I found a couple of 512M ddr2 modules in my junk box, threw them in there and the thing is actually usable now although not for gaming.

An ssd is not even a possibility since the current hdd is a PATA drive (not to mention, not worth spending that much money on).
