Dell inspiron 600m woes. [FIXED Thanks guys]

EDIT: Thank you everyone that helped. I ended up getting a new CD from DELL and then had to replace some hardware as well as install every driver/device under the sun but it works. I am writing this E-mail from the previously damaged lap top I spoke of. So thanks again for the help even though I was a bit annoying to deal with.

First off, hi everyone. I was given a dell 600m by a friend that would not turn on or charge. I pulled it apart and found a bad AC socket. Now it charges and turns on but it says it wont boot because file \windows\system32\config\system is missing or currupt. Also to make matters worse I dont have the set up CD and connot get it. So any ideas on what to do.

The on screen promp said I can repair the problem by inserting the set up CD and I dont have it so I cant reformat.

Lemme try to get a link. Make sure the CD drive works first, and you can get into the BIOS/CMOS... otherwise, getting a OS will do squat.

Yeah the CD drive works fine. Thanks alot. I thought this was going to cost me like 600 or so to replace. Sorry man i'm a noob which you can clearly see. My thing is engines not computers. BIOS/CMOS? This is probably frustrating.

BIOS and CMOS is the exact same thing. I'll put it in short terms for you:

CMOS = Complementary Metal Oxide SemiConductor (:P)

The moment it boots up, look for like "Press F10 to enter BIOS/CMOS".

If not, press F1, F2, F10, Shift, and Del.

it's a long shot, but you can try calling Dell and request that they send you a Recovery CD before you drop $ on your own OS. If the original owner purchased an extended warranty, it may still be covered and they'll send you the CD gratis. Never hurts to try.

Either that, or look at the bottom of that laptop. If it has a COA, you're in luck. You can call Microsoft and ask them for another disc, according to the label. (M$ CD is like $5-$10. Saves alot)

Thank you for calling that to my attention imsati, much appreciated.

Thanks imsati but I tried calling and got a guy who barely spoke english. He also told me the warranty was out of date and I am up the creek. COA?

Yeah I have that sticker with the code on it. So I just call microsoft and tell them whats up?

What was the memory before and now?

What is the OS listed by the little tab? You call em up and ask for a OS CD and tell them the OS, compete with the "Service Pack (SP)" and everything.

Windows XP home edition. I hit F2 after I turned it on and went to the set up screen. It says system memory: 256MB and video memory: 32 MB. I do know that nobody tried to upgrade the memory or anything. What could cause this?
