I have a Dell Inspiron 5150, i just replaced motherboard with a 5100 motherboard
it powers on but its like its not booting up the screen is blank i press caps lock buttons and numberlock to see if it lights up, i used 2 different video cards so im pretty sure its not the monitor, what could this be? It is powering on its just not booting up.

well this is basically the same motherboard and processor in it, i originally installed the RAM in the DIMM B slot then tried the DIMM A slot and whether its in the first or 2nd doesnt seem to make a difference.

i used the 256MB out of the 5150, i also used the same P4 processor.

The 5100 motherboard came with a video card, and also a thermal unit I had to use the thermal unit becuz the 5100 has dif connector than the 5150.

But wouldn't this support the 256MB RAM?

Ok i took out the RAM completely (yes i know wont work without it) but the keybord lights did light up this time without it in. then the comp just turned off. Cud this just be bad ram?

No. I would bet that it came with 333Mhz RAM, because that was the max that the mobo for the 5150 supported. Now you've put a 5100 in, and it only supports RAM up to 266Mhz. You RAM is most likely fine, just incompatible with the new mobo. I would sell it on eBay and bid on some 266.

Your right the ram that i put in it is 333mhz. I'll try the 266 and see if this solves the issue. The P4 processor and video card from the 5150 should work fine thow shouldnt they? thanks for the help guys.

Should work fine. Might I note that this problem could have been resolved five minutes after you posted had you originally heeded my advice. That's ok, no one ever takes my word the first time.

Well... I got the new RAM today, put it in, and it still does the same thing. It powers on but doesnt boot up, the monitor doesnt come on its just black screen the computer just powers on.

FSB compatability? you might try parting out the laptop to buy a new one.... otherwise try reseating the ram and make sure the AC adapter and battery are good....

AC power is fine, the computer is powering on, RAM has been put in several times video cards switched out processor reseated HD put in, taken out dunno what the deal is, ive done everything i can possibly think of, i havnt hooked up another monitor to it, but i dont think its the monitor cuz i dont think its booting up.

try a different monitor if u can. most likely the lcd is dead, or ur video card is defective. if it works with a seperate monitor, that your vid. card is fine. look on ebay, i remember seeing some replacement lcd's for that model.
