Dell Latitude>battery problems

It can't or won't hold a charge and shocks you if you touch it wrong. (the keyboard doesn't work either, so I use and external one)

I'm just looking for what replasement batteries are compatable and about how much they cost. I doubt it's worth fixing the battery but I might as well look into it and be sure.

A list of NewEgg's batteries and AC adapters. I just have no idea what would work with my Dell. The AC adapter works fine, but without holding a charge I can't use the comp unpluged during a storm or power outage.

your best bet is to contact dell and ask them what battery you need based on your computer model and figure out how much it would cost. I'm not sure it would be cost effective to do so, if your keyboard doesn't work there could be larger problems. Usually a battery is about $100 or so, therefor if the laptop isn't worth that much because it is in need of repair it would be more cost effective to buy a new one. At any rate i'd contact dell and see what they have to say about the whole situation.

If it shocks you, I wouldn't even think about doing anything else but calling Dell unless you're out of warranty. Somethings obviously wrong, sounds like something might be wrong with the internals rather than the battery...

The battery got down to 0% and hasn't held a charge since. At the same time it started to shock. There is almost no way that it is underwarrenty. It was purchaced used a few years ago.

Any idea of which number I should call?

Assuming you didn't get it from Dell, it's almost certainly not covered by them anymore. I'm sure Dell has some tech support like you could call, but I'm sure they'd charge you for any repairs they'd do...

Seeing as the battery held a charge up until it began to shock you, I feel quite sure there's a short somewhere inside. Where...now that's the problem. Maybe it's just a bad connection to the battery, or it could be something else actually on the motherboard(or sometimes there's a separate "power board" type thing in there...)

So basically it's only worth scrap metal now? Too bad I can't get my files off it, the flash drive I have won't work with it and my net is dial-up so I can't just e-mail it to myself. T_T No CD burner and the floppy drive is external AND I used the laptop for pictures off a digital camera.

Insert hard drive from laptop into enclosure then connect enclosure via USB 2.0 port to your other computer. After that salvage all parts and scrap the plastic.

One thing to try is freezing the battery. did that my brothers (dell) computer (i seem to find that dells batterys are horable). All you do is rapp your battery in news paper (dont ask) titly. And stink it in a very cold freezer 0 degrees F. for 2 days. (seems like forever if waiting) after take it out for one day to thaw. And try. Good luck

Does freezing work for normal batteries and glowsticks? I just never thought of doing that with a computer battery.

I have a concern with attaching the HD to another HD, what happens if they aren't completly compatable?

Yeah freezing it does work... looking back. do you mind posting a pict of your battery so we can see how it shocks you. I also juat rembered. Some batterys (old batteries) i forget the scientific name but they create "spiter webs" which short the battery out. A simple test is to see if there is resenstance on it. (take a volt meter and set on resentance. put one terminal on the - and one on the + of the battery and if it reads 1 it is good if it is 0 it is bad.) if it is shorting out a "safe" way of fixing this is shorting it out. Take a low voltage (20 volts max) with lota of amps. One way is to take 2 9v batteries together = to - and tap the terminal of the battery with the battery. Do this quickly and do it 10 times. wait. and again. do it till it reads 1 or cloes to there. if that does not work. you have to go to capasitors. get 2 1000 uf or more with 20 v rating and have it like
battery +___++capasitors--____- battery

==========+ computer======- battery
Sorry if this comes out bad.

Also no you do not attach a hd w/ a hd. it is like turning it into a externel hd. All you do is open your comp, find your hard drive and take it to bestbuy or something and tell them you need a notebook hard drive enclosure and show them your hard drive. They will get you the correct hard drive enclosure. Also hard drives are ALWAYS conpadible. They may not have the same connection but no computer rejects a hard drive. (inless it is WAY to big for the computer to handle. With zp and stuff it should not matter)

I was thinking that the laptop HD would just be too old.

I seems this battery thing is over my head, I might just take it to this computer garage-style shop... ^^;
