Dell Latitude XT

Anyone have one or have experience with it? They retail at close to $2000, but I can get a refurbished one at Dell's outlet for about $1000. How slow do you think it'll be with a ULV 1.33Ghz core 2 duo processor and 3 gigs of ram?
 
That all depends on what you want to use it for. Dual core 1.33Ghz is fine for stuff like web browsing and word processing, but if you're talking games/video editing (not playback) and stuff like that, its crap.

Personally, I would never go for anything lower than dual core 2.0Ghz, but it does really depend on what you're using it for (to post here, you only need dial-up and a 1.4Ghz single core processor, 256mb RAM and XP, lol).

My school used to have those laptops a while back in the science department, and they ran XP, Office and Firefox just fine (finally let us have that one!). Bit of a slow start up, but probably due to networking wirelessly.

Basically, if you browse the web, and type letters, play videos/DVD's etc its fine. If you want to play games and edit videos, its not worth even looking at.

Yeah that's what I figured. It's going to be used as a secondary computer in college, so I won't be doing any gaming what so ever, as my desktop can handle all that. I personally just like how portable it is and how sleek it is compared to the HP tx2500.
 
Between the tx2500 and the Latitude XT, I would probably go for the tx2500.

A friend of mine has it for university, and he gets a full day of computer studies and IT courses from the batteries you get with it (on power saver with wifi enabled). On power saver, you still get 1.4Ghz dual core processing, and on normal power, you get 2.1Ghz Dual Core (Turion X2 Ultra ZM-80).

It retails at £700 here in the UK, so a similar configuration is probably about $1500~ USD for a new machine. I think HP have an outlet, but I haven't looked. Maybe a Google search or a quick call would find that out?

I think the Dell is slightly sleeker, but I have not looked into weight, only knowing that the tx2500 series comes in at 1.95kg (with battery). In the US, it'd be the tx2500z though, so you might find it as that.

In the US the two laptops are virtually the same price (hp being new, dell being refurbished), at $1000. As for the weight, the XT is 3.5lbs and the HP is 5 lbs (with 8 cell battery and DVD burner), so there's no comparison there.

I'm so far leaning towards the dell right now as it's a lot sleeker and smaller than the HP, and has a longer battery life, 3-4 hours on power saver mode with the default 6-cell battery.
 
Ah, didn't know the weight of the Dell - I hadn't looked into it. It probably has the longer battery life because of the ULV (ultra low voltage) processor. Simply put, the Dell is a good laptop, as long as you're only looking for Office and Internet browsing. That kind of processor combined with Vista isn't going to do much more I'm afraid. That's why I suggested the HP.

A plus point on the HP is that it has the best integrated graphics card ever manufactured. It can play Crysis on an integrated chip with no dedicated card/increase in power usage. This is what probably makes up the difference in price between this and the Dell.

The Dell has lower processing and higher battery. The HP has higher processing and lower battery, but plays games too. But then if you've got the desktop, you don't need that. Just a neat little addition, especially for a portable tablet.

Hope you find what you're looking for in the Dell.
 
Yup, now I'm just waiting for that 20% off coupon dell offers once in a while. Then I can get a Core 2 Duo ULV 1.33ghz, 1gb ram (will upgrade to 3GB via newegg), 120gb hard drive and LED screen for under $1000. Can't wait :D.
