i have a dell dimension 5051, how doi tell which type of memory to buy for it (ram)?

The Crucial Advisor tool does a pretty good job.

Most DDR2 should work. It looks like the board has a maximum of 4 GB so you'd be looking at a four 1 GB sticks if you wanted to 'max out the specs'

Adding to what beers said, Dell will try to tell you that ONLY Sticks a,b,c will work in your computer (a,b, and c all being sticks that dell makes probably). Truth is almost any ddr2 RAM will work as long as its specs fall within those of the suggested RAM. You might also want to google the "*type of ram you are looking at buying*+ dimension 5051" and see if anyone has run into any issues.

Dell doesn't manufacture RAM. Other companies do and Dell uses it in their computers, but sometimes sticks their logo on them
