My mother board mounts to the bottom of the case, and there is a card plugged into it that lines up with the pci expansion slots. My pci cards plug into it. Is this their way to have more slots to the motherboard?? Is this common?? I'm preparing to build my first pc, and am researching everything I can think of, if for no reason other than general knowledge on the subject...Don't regular external pci slots line up with the motherboard??

Dell has their own designs for certain models. On the board there they had to use a pci adapter. That's an old P III system there alright. The general specifications can be seen at http://docs.us.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ban_gx1/specs.htm

On even newer Dell models at the present time you generally won't find that type of adapter used. On mid tower atx cases the amount of pci slots available depends on the make and model board. You can't add additional pci slots as a rule. When choosing a board for a custom build you can go with either a micro atx model with only two pci slots on average some having three. Or you can pick out a model with upto 5 slots.

That's due to the way they custom styled the case there placing the board in an awkward position. Once you get into a mid tower atx case you will see how the pci slot on the board line up with the openings provided on just about every case other then Dell's! While you are at it take a look at some of the styles on gaming and other cases seen at http://www.xoxide.com/pccases.html You'll find a few wild ideas there! How about about a carrying handle?
