Dell Optiplex GX150 Help Please

I was given a Dell Optiplex GX150 pc. When you plug it in, The power LED blinks orange and that's it. Cant get it to power on or anything else. I have changed out the power supply with a basic 300watt one ( its not made for the dell nor does it fit in the case I just hooked it up to see if it was the PSU at all ) and once I connected the other PSU, The computer powered on and booted to bios with no problem. There for I think the power supply is dead. Now, The 2ed problem is that the Hard Drive , CD-ROM drive, and Floppy drive are NOT seen in the bios and the computer wont boot up past post. I have reset the bios to defaults and it did not fix it. The hdd and cd rom drive both spin up and are connected fine. Nothing is loose. What can be causing this? Could it be the fact that I am using a sub power supply and not the one that is made for it and fits in the case? I am stuck. I know this happens to the computers at work all the time and they take them and when they bring them back they always tell me that the PSU went bad and they had to change it. So that's what my guess is, But when it did not see the drives that is making me think its something else that's causing this to happen. Let me know what I can try to solve this issue. Thanks in advance.

It's highly likely that when the power supply failed. It happens quit often when cheap under powered PSU fail. Depending on the Dell you may have damaged the mobo with the standard ATX PSU since many older Dells you a differnt pin out on the power supply connector so you can't just use a standard ATX PSU. You can check http://www.power-on.com for a good cross refernce list.

Also, if the power supply failed then you could have knocked out a few components when it did fail, thats why i dont trust any pc's built by gateway/dell/anyone really, as they always use cheap ineffecient china brand power supplies that fail

Have you checked the cmos battery?Still placing my bets on there being something wrong with the power supply though. Also... not really a need to double post in 3 minutes, the edit button is there for a reason:P

To clear the CMOS battery as the issue, just take it out and boot up and see if you have the same issue. All the battery does is hold your BIOS information while the computer isn't turned on. It really does sound like your PSU if failing.

Even if it was the CMOS battery witch I think its not since It keeps settings and the system date and time when its unpluged for a few days. I dont think that would cause it would it? I have ran pcs before with no cmos battery and they ran fine.

holy cow deja vu! I just got one of these machines for free too and am having issues although not nearly as serious.
