ive been lookin to get a laptop and been searchin in both dell and compaq computers...now the Dell XPS is freakin sveetness...but i really dont want to spend $3,500 on a laptop...ive heard good and bad things about both companies but i still could use info :D thx!

Compaq Presario laptops are very good and personally, I love the styling. Dell is....well...Dell. Enough said. :D. Actually they really aren't bad. What is your budget? Because the Compaq laptops are generally on the lower price end, and the higher end for them is the HP Pavilions.

yeah i cant really afford the higher up dells lol...just a tad out of my price range lol :D i havent even looked at HP...forgot about them...and yeah the compaq's are a lot cheaper....their most expensive is like $900 soo...

Because HP and Compaq are the same company, so Compaq took the lower end and HP is on the higher end.

You didn't state your actual budget.

Dell is pretty good, thats the laptop I have. The downside is that on mine the fan is on the bottom so it tends to overheat alot. The speed is pretty good for the money and they seem to hold up for a while.

Dell is good. Support is great too. Make sure you get the warranty and you won't have to pay a dollar for anything. My video card just broke so I called them and 2 days later a technician came to my house and installed it (not like I couldn't do it, the guy on the phone insisted).

The support is near the best you can get with any company. Mine had a very bad virus a year ago because I was dumb enough not to have a anti virus and he talked me through the steps to totally redo it and it was like new. The downside is I think that some of their technical support is located in another country and it was a little hard to understand what he was saying.

I highly recomend the dell 700m or 710m... Very nice computer, good speeds.. It is also a smaller laptop, you can actually fit it on your lap. I got mine for ~$850 3 months ago.

Even if you don't want to run Mac OS, you can always run Windows on it, the new MacBooks (and the soon new revision) from Apple are some killer machines for the price, if you don't mind the 13.3" screen.
