A friend is giving me his Dell optiplex gx 250 without the 2.26 processor or ram but I have my old trusty P4 1.5 processor and 512 megs of PC2100 will the 1.5 work without to much work???

I don't know for sure as I've never swapped processors in a Dell, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. As long as the socket is the same and all...

It depends on the socket of the P4 you have. The Dell is a S478, I'm pretty sure your 1.5GHz will be a S423

i would guess they are different cores, meaning that more than likely the 1.5 will not work unless you flash the BIOS to support the core of the 1.5...which in turn probably isnt all that likely, because Dell doesnt have the greatest BIOS updates, but you could still check it out..my guess would be that the 1.5 is the Willamette core, whereas the 2.26 is a Northwood, but i cant guarantee, you can run CPU-Z on it, to see what kind of core it is, as well as other interesting stuff. but just some stuff to think about.

after doing some snooping, i found out that your 1.5 is indeed a Willamette core, and that the 2.26 is indeed a Northwood, i found this site http://encyclopedia.lockergnome.com/s/b/Pentium_4

and based on the chart at the very bottom of the page it would seem to be what i said..so see if there is a BIOS update that allows your board to support the Willamette core, of course youll need a CPU to flash your BIOS, so maybe you can see if your buddy will pop in his 2.26 for a final go-round:)

well even a 2.26 is a decent chunk ol change, im not saying with 100% assurance that your 1.5 wont work, im just saying theres a pretty good chance it wont, did you see what kind of BIOS flashes were available?
