Dell Studio 15 or HP HDX-1160US

Hi everyone,

I'm torn between two laptop options (I'm in Canada by the way):

1. Dell Studio 15, 2.53GHz, 4GB RAM, 250 GB 5400rpm HD, 8xDVD+/-RW, 802.11n, 15.4" 1280x800, discreet graphics 256MB for $1329 Cdn on dell.ca

2. HP HDX 16-1160US, 2.4GHz, 6GB RAM, 500 GB 5400rpm HD, 8xDVD+/-RW, 802.11a/g/n, 16" 1366x768, discreet graphics 512MB for $1402 Cdn on hpshopping.ca

My view:
I'm leaning towards to HP. What frustrates me is that HP does not allow any customization on its Canadian site. Having said that, not sure what else I would want to add to it.

What do you all think?
Thanks!

The only thing the Dell has on the HP is the CPU. Plus I prefer Dell cause in my experience they last longer. But The HP would maybe out perform the Dell due to the fact of more memory, better gpu and if you don't plan on using a external HDD since the HP with the larger HDD will take longer to fill up which means will run slightly faster. I think it's once you fill the HDD over 50% it starts to slow down. I do recommend external HDD if you don't have one.

Hi there dvilimek !

I'm glad I found your post !

I am debating buying this exact system.

However, the price you quote below for the HP system is NOT right,
it is $1649.99 !

If you had seen it for $1402 Canadian, you should have jumped on it !
that is even lower than the 16" HP laptop on the Bestbuy.ca site that is currently $1299 ! and only has a 2.14 gig cpu and 320 gig hard drive !
link to this system here:

where oh where did you get a price of $1402 ? if I could get it for that price I'd be all over that - like today.

Thanks for any info. I just got off the phone with an HP rep and he said there are NO specials or coupon codes for this laptop at this time, so I don't know where you got that price from, but it is/was amazing dude !

On the Dell vs HP thing - see, all the boxes at HP are sealed, and ready to go. The HP rep told me today ( Feb.27, 2009 ) that all orders are shipped within 3-5 days, and that they are shipped with Purolator. ( $15 for all laptops )

I'm on the Notebook forums also and was debating buying a simular system from Dell ( the XPS-16 ) however, when you look at the time involved to get this to you - about 30 DAYS ! and some have had delays so it's a month and 1/2 before they get their laptop, that really scares me. Many are having problems with the 1080p screens ( too much red ) and - there are major heat problems with them also, which also scares me.

I've decided to stay clear of Dell. I asked the HP rep where the laptops come from, and indeed they are shipped from Toronto, they don't come from anywhere else, as do the Dell.

See with Dell, everything is put together after you do an order, and it may take 2 weeks before they even start building your system ( which to me is a total joke )

Everyone has their own thoughts and opinion about Dell though, but the waiting game for me is not good, plus they charge your credit card right away, and then you still don't have your laptop for 30 days from the day of purchase.

Not sure if the original poster is subscribed to this thread, but perhaps not, as there was no response from him.

However, - I just wanted to update this thread.

I contacted HP via telephone on Friday, and I had somebody call me back
with some interesting info.

The price of $1402 has never been offered by HP.ca - ever -
on that system, so anyone reading this, just be alerted that the system has always been priced at $1649.99 . The price has never been lower than this.

There has never been any coupon code to drop the price of that system, no rebate, no nothing, so perhaps the OP has the price
mixed up with a much slower system.
