Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I didn':confused:t know where to put it, so anyway.
My dell laptop has recently started making this strange sound, it's definately not coming from the speakers, it sounds like a kettle whistling but not as loud. Is this a cause for concern?

Thanks

Probably a fan. How old is the system and what are the ambient conditions (warm room, dusty, use in bed, any pets)? Could also be your Hard Drive, but odd noises in laptops like the one you describe are generally due to dust along the CPU heatsink or fan area and the fan has to spin faster to dissipate the heat.

It's a warm room and at the time i had it on a wooden bedside table. And I've had it since christmas 08' but I think it was used beforehand to install programs onto it

I'd look at the exhaust vent first (usually in the back or underneath and see if it's clogged. if it is, you may have to remove the keyboard to fully clean any interior dust away, depending on where the CPU and heat pipes are located inside.
