Hi folks. First of all it has been some time back that I was into cf. I have recently came across this particular unique "mobile gaming supremacy" desktop replacement, notebook powerhouse and was thinking if it is a good buy for a all in one work and play machine for college and home use. Anyway, I reside in Singapore and was into some thoughts if I could extend comments from all around the globe at least, computer forum.

The following price and specs are from dell Singapore site.
In an effort to make it easier for everyone, I have included a currency converter between USD and SGD as follows: http://sg.finance.yahoo.com/currency/convert?amt=1&to=SGD&from=USD

I know price and specs ratio diff from country to country. And I could see that in Asia we are paying more for something that could be lesser in US.
But this is the best available choice that is avilable in here as there are no alienwares for us. Lol.

Okay. Let me jump to the specs of the dell XPS M1730 from my region.
It goes by.

Intel® Centrino® Duo Processor Technology - Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T7500
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium
2GB DDR2 SDRAM
17.0" UltraSharp™ Widescreen WUXGA (1920x1200) TFT Display with TrueLife™ and 2.0MP Integrated webcam
160GB* Hard Drive
DVD Burner*
Dual 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8700M GT graphics with NVIDIA SLI Technology
Intel® 4965 Wireless-N Mini-card
1-Year XPS™ Premier Service Support with 1-Year CompleteCover™*

Total - S$3,899 ($2754USD)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
After customising I would see the following upgrade.
Intel Core 2 Extreme X7900 (which supports overclocking I am thinking of pushing it to at least 3.2ghz coupled with a zalman NC2000 dual 1500rpm notebook cooler pad.) + 1749.45 ($1236USD)
Genuine Windows XP Pro SP2 + $41.73 ($29.50USD)
250GB Sata HDD + $32.52 ($27.21USD)
AGEIA PhysX Processor + $325.28 ($229.80USD)
Dell Care Premium + $360.59 ($254.70USD)
Dell XPS M1730 Nylon Backpack + $155.15 ($109.60USD)
Mcafee Security Center 36months OEM + $58.85 ($41.60USD)

Total - S$6628.65 ($4682USD)

Now I shall mention my needs. I am thinking of this as an overall all in one machine for work and play. I need it to be lasting for at least 7 to 8 years and capable of handling vista in time of upgrading in future. I have considered alienware but it is not available in my region so I thought this is perharps the best that I could get, at least in my region for a sum of 4682USD.

I have some questions.
1. Would $4682 be a large spending on laptops in the states considering the difference in currency exhange rates?
2. Is it worth the upgrade and any advice or tips on any changes? Or is it best to leave it to the default specs?
3. How do you think this specs could last?

How would I appreciate if I could got a few comments from you people from cf, including mods.

Cheers.
Cathay.
Your repsonses are well appreciated.

Yes!

I have recently came across this particular unique "mobile gaming supremacy" desktop replacement, notebook powerhouse and was thinking if it is a good buy for a all in one work and play machine for college and home use.

So what exactly will you use it for? Brand new games or those a few years old; college/home use as far as writing papers and tracking finances or college/home use as far as CAD applications, video editing, or doing several high-CPU-intensive things at once?

For one thing if you want it to be up-to-date for up to 8 years get a quad processor, not a dual.
