Designing the ultimate machine!

I really want to build a dream computer. I spend so much time on mine, that I want the best I can get. I thought about a Mac-Pro, and have also looked into the new Athlon 64 Quad FX processors (Asus motherboards allow you to run two). I don't think an 8-core is really necessary though.

Budget: I'd like to spend around $2000, no more than $2500.

Needs: I already have the monitors, and I need the computer to run both 1440x900 resolution monitors flawlessly. I need to be able to multitask 3ds-max, photoshop, flash, and perhaps Microsoft visual studios, with the occasional movie playing on one of the screens.

Wants: I saw the Gigabyte's I-ram and was very intrigued, wonder what the benefits of running my OS off of that would be. Would really like to run a RAID 0 for my applications. Like the Raptor X harddrives a lot(10,000 rpms WOW!). Will be working with the quake 3 engine in the very near future.

As you can see I'm very scatter-brained at this point. There are so many amazing things out there, I know I can't have them all for only $2,500, but I figured I could get pretty close. What would you do if you were me and you had $2500 dollars to spend on a computer.

Note: If you'd like to spec the whole thing, I might take you seriously, down to the case and powersupply that is.

so you want your computer to be based off of a Athlon CPU or can it be an intel, either way do you want quad core, quad core is a lil over doing it for what you said you needed it for but if you have the money go for it and also do you prefer Nvidia or Ati, and onnnnneeeee more thing, do you want Xp, or Vista

the last two are either a fan cooling your CPU or water, its your choice, i put this together in like 15 mins so i might be forgetting some stuff, an im sure the motherboards that run two CPU' s are mainly for servers an wont really do you any good well if you need help or if i forgot somthing let me know i didnt check the price since im to tired right now hope this gave you an idea, o i forgot the Graphics card
if you wanna go all out right now you can get an Nvidia 8800 gtx or gts, the gtx is more power for but it depends what you need an if your running two 1440 by 900 side by side for games an you wana max out resolution as much as possible go with a 8800 gtx

Nice, thanks for the advice. I know it's overkill, but I want to go all out as much as possible. I'm comfortable with XP...but eventually I want to go to Vista, once it's a bit more stable. Also, I don't really know the difference between Nvidia and ATI.

Also, if I wanted to go WAY overkill, how do you think I would fair with the new Asus motherboard with two AMD Quad cores in it, for development purposes. It would take a little more time to build completely, because money restrictions would make it so I would add a nicer video card and more ram later on, but it would render 3ds max like a breeze. I'm more interested in development than gaming, and potentially just having the most powerful computer possible...even if I don't need it all.

If you can wait until July 22nd it would be beneficial(Q6700 from $980 to $566)

Core 2 Qaud Q6700 - $560(July 22nd)
Gigabyte Ga-P35-DQ6 - $250
Western Digital Raptor 10k RPM - $200
Antec P180B Case - $130
Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 4-4-4-12 (4 x 1Gb) - $262
Samsung SATA DVD Burner - $78
Corsair 620HX 620 Watt - $190
Thermaltake Big Typhoon CPU Cooler - $45
PNY Quadro FX1500 256MB - $530
or...
EVGA 8800GTX - $560
500GB Western Digital Harddrive- $115
Windows Vista 64 Bit Home Premium - $120
Total: $2480 or... $2510

The Q6700 is almost as good as dual FX-74s and better some times for half of the price

WOW... I'll have to look over my options a lot more. I won't have all of the money until mid July anyways. How much power do you think I would need for the AMD 4x4 config... I noticed you had 600 something watts for one quad core and a nice vid.

well if its mainly for like 3d work i heard people say gaming cards arent good for that, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814195006

and if its not for gaming and like mostly 3d rendering stuff, im not to famillier with it but go with the windows xp 64 bit or vista 64 bit beacause i think those are the only ones that let you use more then 3 gigs of ram, i would help you out more but im more better at gaming machines
