Desktop blowout

Hey folks,

Yesterday morning I went to turn on my HP420y (from about 2003). It was plugged into a power strip with two other devices.

I turned on the power strip and heard an ugly electric popping sound (just one pop), and now I can't get the PC turned on at all.

I checked the outlets and the power cord by swapping things around, and these are all fine.

I'm wondering what the most likely scenario is -- in other words what part of the PC 'blew', and is it worthwhile to try to fix. I'm also wondering if a lay-person like me could tell what blew out simply by opening up the case and having a look.

The hard drive was making a lot of noise the last time I used it -- don't know if it could be related.

I figure I'm about ready for a new PC in any case. I may just take the hard drive out and take the rest down to Goodwill.

sounds like your psu fried something...

hard to say what it is until you try every part on a separate comp. besides a 2003 comp sounds like you could use a new PC anyways.

Either the power supply went out or maybe a cap blew on the board. Look at the board real close and see if you can see a blown capacitor, if not the power supply probably went out.
