imposting this in the desktop sections because i dont know what aspect of my comptuer may be causing the problem.
my problem is that i try to run fear at max settings and it is choppy gameplay. i have a 7900 GT, 1 stick of 1gb patriot extreme performance RAM, and a 4200+ X2. do you think my system should be able to run FEAR at max settings?
P.S. i have AA and AF off, and i can only run at medium settings without lagging.

Your ram is what is lagging cause i can run fear maxed out with full AA and AF on and a resolution of 1152Xsomething and i usually get between 20 and 80 FPS but i couldnt do that until i upgraded to 2GB of ram. So i think your ram is your bottleneck there i would upgrade to 2GB and that way you will be in dual channel and you should be able to run fear maxed.

How can you be so sure it's the RAM? It could be something as simple as software...

That being said, that's where I'd begin. Try to close as many processes as you can, exit things on the task bar, etc etc. Running Hijack this, spybot, adaware, etc etc. Check the system is clean before you start blaming hardware...

Because if i can play it with high settings with soft shadows and aa and af i think it is a ram problem cause he has a 7900GT and i have a 7600GT.

Im thinking its ram too. His computer should be able to play it maxed out. My computer(A64 3500+, x850xt) can play it maxed out with AA and AF on 8x/16x. I

Ya but try closing out backround processes first, that will free up more ram, if that helps, then its probably your ram, and then upgrade if you want.

When you are playing FEAR, hit CTRL>>ALT>>DLT and see how much memory is being used and post it here.

I had the pleasure (if that's what you want to call it) of checking out FEAR the other day on a very loaded Dell PC with a dual core Intel processor, 2GB of RAM and I can't remember what the VGA was, but it was very current. The computer is only a month old.

What I observed was that in certain sections of the game it is very choppy, like for the first ten minutes of the game, and then it smooths out. I'm not too sure what is going on there, but it appears to be a game issue. I wouldn't be too worried about it.

Just for the records, I just played FEAR Combat on my PC a bit and it runs quite well on all the highest settings at 1024x768(no AA or anything) with only the occational studder. That was with 15 others running around, too...

I have a single core...
1 gig of RAM...
a 6800XT...
and i run FEAR at 1152X864 with 4XAA, 8XAF, at 30FPS. I dont think the RAM is the problem.

thanks for the input ill try all your suggestions and if they dont work i will upgrade to dual channel RAM, and burgerbob is ur ram dual channel because if it is, it owuld be the same amount as mine but running twice as fast.
my mem usage while in fear is 400,500k approx. this is at medium settings,
at maximum settings it gets to barely under 600,000k after stopping mid play a few times it goes up to over 700,000k
also i installlled windows less than a week ago so i dont have any spyware, viruses, etc. but i dont have service pack 2 or any windows updates yet either i will get those very soon.

well after playing the game for about 20 minutes and getting to interval 3, i noticed that the game lags for me for a few seconds at a time. but these points are pretty spaced out. inside the rooms and halls it seems to be very smooth gameplay but i noticed a bit of hard lag when i walked outside and climbed a ladder and 2 choppers flew overhead. this leads me to believe it may well be my RAM.
please comment your thoughts about my situation.
