desktop build, advice

Hi all,
just wondering if i could get your opinions on the components i've selected for my new desktop...
I'm basically building a computer that will run CAD software, a few games here and there (although i'm not that bothered about ridiculous graphics and performance but ideally i'd like to run current games at reasonably high resolutions), and general windows utilities, programs, internet etc... I'd like this computer to be still relatively fast in about 3 years time and not outdated for atleast 5 years - as i say, not that bothered about games, so i wouldnt worry about trying to keep up with high demanding graphics, it's all about keeping everything running fast now... already got a decent soundcard, psu and case... so the rest is here:
any comments appreciated!

Looks great, however I'd take a look at an ASUS motherboard. Some people have great luck with MSI, others have bad luck. ASUS tends to be pretty steady with quality. I'd recommend the ASUS P5Q Pro for you, seeing as I have one.

hi mate,
cheers for that thought, i initially looked at the asus x38 and changed my mind for the msi simply on price... having a little trouble on your suggestion though - found only 1 p5q pro that supports ddr3 ram and is a little more expensive that the one i'd spec'd on here...
any more thoughts??

Might have limited availability where you're at, check ebay.uk and see if you can find one. It is offered in DDR3, however they also have DDR2. See what you can find on ebay.. GL to ya.

I agree with bullzi. DDR3 is not worth it and i like the Asus motherboard, very nice one.

Also i recommend getting the 64bit of windows.

i was looking at the 64 bit version but it seems a few bits of software i use arent yet supported and i wasnt planning on going over 4gb ram so thought it was pretty pointless at this point...

as far as ddr3 is concerned, bearing in mind that the processor i've spec'd has a 1333fsb, would this not deem the ddr3 running at 1333 worth while - i dont mind paying the extra if it means the computer has a bit longer life span... or is it really that pointless?

64bit is better, and will be able to use all the programs that are able to be used on the 32 bit system.

It's not worth the DDR3, and you won't notice every difference.

Yea DDR3 is a year or two out before creating a difference in computing. For super high-end workstations that cost $10k and up, sure they can afford it and probably need it for whatever they're doing. But for us that are just playing games, surfing the net, designing websites etc. DDR3 won't be needed for quite sometime..

You also need 64 bit in order to utilize all 4GB or the RAM that you plan on getting. And I'd also have to recommend Vista because of it's support of DirectX10.

thanks for all your thoughts... a few things:

64bit windows - i need to be able to run adobe cs3 programs... but:

is there now universal support for '32 bit only' programs???

graphics - judging by a lot of reviews the nvidia graphics cards perform a lot better than the ati ones... thoughts on this???

cpu - do i need a 12mb cache, is it really worth the price difference??!

ram - was thinking pc8500 as opposed to the one suggested pc6400 - only £15/$30 more???

mobo - asus or gigabyte??
