Desktop Display / Restore Problem

Hi all.

I'm using a Compaq Presario running Windows XP and somewhere along the line, a bug got in there. Whilst I can see the wallpaper picture when booting up or shutting down, it won't display on the desktop, and Windows won't let me fix it. What's even scarier is that the restore feature that came with this PC is disabled and again, I can't get it to work.

Anybody know a fix for this? I assume it's a registry issue, but I won't dare mess with that without some really specific info.

Thanks for any help...

You can try the manual method for starting the system restore process by booting to the safe mode/command prompt only option seen in the F8 start menu that can brought up just after the post tests complete. When you choose that option and reach the command prompt you simply type in the command "%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe" and press the enter key.

To run the system file checker to verify the condition of the system files in case one or more of the essential is missing or corrupted you will need the Windows recovery or installation disk in the cd drive. You start this by typing "sfc scannow" at the Run prompt and hit enter. That will run for several minutes generally. But it can bail you out at times when you see a bad install of something.

For checking to see if the system restore feature is running go into the Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Services and Applications open the "Services" link seen on the left bottom of the screen there. The next screen will have a scrolling column on the right side for all running and stopped apps and services there. Scroll down to the system restore item there to see if it is stopped or seen at automatic. If you see it as stopped right click on it and choose the start option.

I had a virus that stated to remove things like when you go onto search you can't see anything. It might be that. Do a full virus and spyware scan. If you have one use and registry cleaner and disk cleaner.
