Desktop freezes after starting (Doesn't even load Bios)

My kids desktop got this weird problem starting yesterday. It has windows-xp before and was having trouble loading the OS, so I went a head and started loading Windows-98 on it and the installation has formatted the whole harddrive and hanged while it was trying to check the harddisk for errors.

Since, it was not resonding for a very long time, I just hardbooted the machine in the middle and after that the system doesn't even load BIOS also.

It just freezes after displaying the COMPAQ logo. I can't even enter in to BIOS with pressing F10 key.

I am not sure if I can fix this or just have to throw this desktop away :-)

Please suggest any hints/clues to resolve this problem.

DONT THROW IT AWAY. IF YOU WANT TO SHIP IT TO ME.

1. Reset the CMOS. Take the battery from the motherboard. take out all the plugs, wait 30 sec, reconnect the battery and wires in back.

2. check you RAm, if you bumped into it, or if it just died.

Hey parthum,

What I can tell is that your Harddisk is been damaged. If there is a solution, or better yet, I would do this:
Plug out the Harddisk from your pc put it in an other pc, and let it scan for mistakes. If it has found some mistakes, it will recover it and hopefully, your Harddisk will be saved.

An other option is, buy a new Harddisk.

If it is the problem with harddisk, why is it not even allowing me to enter in to BIOS settings ?

I was able to format and work with the hard disk minutes before it started showing up this hanging behariour.

Thanks.

Well, Zangestu is partly correct. If yuo HDD is failing, it will be very hard for the CMOS to detect it. Meaning, it may seem like freezing during POST.

I have seen a harddrive stop my computer from POSTing,

I have also seen a harddrive working perfect one day, and just die the next.

As Oscary said, Remove the CMOS Battery, Wait 5 minutes (10 to be absolutly thorough)

Replace it back in.

Check your ram, Take both of em out (if you have two)

Plug only one back in, if still not working, take that one out, try the other.

Also, Unplug your harddrive and see if it Posts.
