Desktop Internet Connection Problem

So I have finally sorted out connecting my desktop to the internet. It has been working fine until tonight when I decided to add a new email account. Apparently the network connection is not being recognised. Now I already have a laptop which is also connected to the internet and it is working fine. The problem seems to be with the network socket in the desktop box, it's supposed to light up when the cable is inserted but it doesn't. What does this mean? It was working earlier today, but won't connect now. Any clues?

By the way we're on broadband (ADSL I think).

Computer is about 18 months old, and cable is virtually brand new. Haven't tried another cable yet, but may have to. Will buy one tomorrow.
