Desktop items in active memory?

A techy friend of mine has just told me that ALL items on a person's desktop are loaded into active memory, drastically slowing down the computer if there are a number of large files.

I've never ever heard of this, is this true?

And if it is, the dual-layer DVD iso (larger than 8 GB) on my desktop was loaded into memory while I play demanding computer games?

Thanks for setting the record straight!

Anything seen on the desktop is found in the desktop folder under your user name. Anything downloaded to the desktop is simply present in the folder itself and not actively loaded into memory. For the most part anything seen is almost memory free shortcuts being displayed by Windows.

For something like an iso image that simply sits idle in whatever folder it sits in and only sees memory used once loaded into a media player of some type. Someone has been feeding you a line of crock apparently. Background services and programs like antivirus protection and firewalls are far more likely to hamper any gaming performance.
