Basically what it says in the title. (Posting thread through my laptop)
I was checking something on mozilla firefox. Then, I had a BSOD and my brother shut off the computer while the memory was in the process of being dumped. I powered on the computer and during the startup process, the computer stops at a black screen with a blinking underscore at the top left and nothing else happens.

Unhook the hard drive and see if it continues to boot but gives you an error. If so, you have a bad hard drive.

Ok. Thats the message your supposed to get. It seems your hdd has failed. What brand of hard drive is it?

Ah,Hitachi Deskstar...also known as Deathstar. :D

Id look into getting yourself a nice 3.0 Gb/sec SSD to replace the Hard drive,Regular hard drives are still overpriced imo.

But if you wold prefer to stay with a standard hard drive,Look at Seagate,Western Digital etc.

Edit: So what should I do, get a new HDD? If yes then what brand do u suggest and is it possible to move the things stored inside that HDD to the new one?

I moved the ISO file that was on the hitachi link onto a CD, then put it into the Desktop. I heard the CD running on my desktop but nothing different happened. Am I supposed to still be on the black screen with the blinking underscore at the top left?

Edit: according to your post in that other thread, a program was supposed to come up? if so, it didnt.

You just can't copy the iso file to a cd, it won't work. You have to use burning software that will write the image to the cd and then boot to it. Any burning software should be able to write iso files to a cd.

I burned the CD this time with IMGburn and inserted the disc and the program ran. What are these choices given to me? I didn't know so i left it alone for the countdown to go to 0

The serial number on my HDD is 14 characters, why can I only input 10 when it asks me to type the serial number?

Edit: forgot to say thanks for all the help you're giving me :)

So your saying the drive didnt show on the list after you agreed to the license agreement? Thats the only time you have to put in your drives serial number.

Lol I wouldn't forget to plug my hdd back in before closing the clase

Edit: I think I'll just buy a new one on the black friday sale. Do I need my windows vista cd for the new hdd? if so, then what do i do if i lost it? lol

Sounds like your drive just crashed. I know you have put the side back on, but can you tell when you boot if the drive is spinning up by sound or touch?
