Hi

I'm upgrading to a desktop from a laptop as mine is slowly dying.
I was wondering what spec I might need for Autocad and Phototshop.
I went into PC world and the guy just bombarded me with info and I got confused, i'm not the big on computer knowledge.

If anyone could help it'd be much appreciated =)

Thanks!

What is your budget? For photoshop, you need a lot of fast RAM and a nice CPU. You don't need a good graphics card unless you also want to game on the system.

OS = operating system e.g. WIndows.

You will need a 64bit operating system to address the 4GB of RAM (really the min required).

If you plan on doing 3D modelling you will also need a dedicated graphics card, otherwise, focus on a quad core CPU (look at Core i5 or similar)

Yeah £500 includes the monitor, yes to 3D cad, i'm doing interior architecture at uni and need it for my second year. I really don't have that much cash but obviously will scrape a bit more together if needed for a better spec.

I think you will be struggling completely for that budget. A proper 3Dcad graphics card is 1000 quid by itself. Focus on a 2nd gen Core i3 (preferably i5) system with 4 gb of ram. Get a second hand monitor of ebay

£500 for everything... a little bit difficult. I assume you are not building it yourself.

Allow £100 for monitor

The one thing worry me about this is the power supply. the recommend power supply would be 400W for 5670

Buy windows and install yourself
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-O..._1_1?s=software&ie=UTF8&qid=1309525673&sr=1-1

Total £514

Or this

ring them to see if they can change cpu to athlon II x4 640. I assume they will charge you extra £40-50?
Then it comes up with £320 - 330 in total.
Then you need to add a video card yourself. May be 5770. or ask them how much they charge you to do so.

Does it matter? That fact is, he can't afford 2k. And thus, I recommend the best he can do within his budget.

It'll run, but just not that fast. I saw a significant speed difference between my computer (w/ 8800GT) and my school's engineering lab computers (w/ some Quadros card) in running autocad. Mind you that the rest of the computer is pretty much identical (quad core 2.4ghz C2Q vs quad core ~2.4 Xenon, 4GB memory).

The basic theory here is you need as much ram and as many cores on the CPU as you can afford. I would look to the LGA1155 Core i3 or i5 if possible. If you are planning on doing 3D work, you need a Quadro card and good PSU, however you can get away with the most powerful GPU you can afford.

In AUstralia costs like this (for students) is tax deductible, you should check it out.

Asyourwish, can you please remove your link and refrain from linking in the future to a competing computer forum. Not cool.
