Desktop to Laptop transfer with Ethernet (CAT5)?

AlienWare

New Member
I have a Dell desktop computer and a Alienware M14x Laptop both running windows 7. I need to transfer a large amount of files (around 20gb) using a Ethernet cable.

What is the step by step process for doing this? Thanks alot, CPF, you rock!

I know i CAN do that, but i WANT to use the CAT5 option. With a flash drive, i have to delete the files, put more on the flash, then transfer. This continues for a LONG time. I need to be able to select what files i want to transfer and have it transfer them while i am out doing whatever i want... I was doing this for my old laptop a while ago, but forgot how to do it.

Set them up so they both belong to homegroup (should be by default) and the defualt shared folder is the Public Documents folder. Go to Computer, and on the left hand side should be "Network". From there you should see the other computer and you can drag and drop the files.

Do i make the workgroup names of both computers the same? Can i also connect them via CAT5 or is this only for WiFi?

Interface doesn't matter, they just have to be on the same lan. And yes they have to be on the same workgroup.

Ok, so i am trying to share my D: drive, which i use for storage, not my OS. I shared it, went to Network, found it, and I am able to access every thing in it, except for the folder i WANT to transfer to my laptop.

Problem:

I have been able to transfer user accounts, etc. but i need to transfer my World of Warcraft folder. It says its being shared but when i try to get in it or copy it to transfer, it says i need administrative privileges from the network owner. I am the Admin on my computer, so WTF do i do!?

The easiest way to share file accross the local network is to:

1. Be in the same work group - this can be anything, as long as both computers have it the same

2. If PC has admin account named "owner" for example, create an admin account with the same name on the other PC. It will be much easier if you give the account a password. So PC and Laptop has admin account "Owner" with password of "password"

Right click on whatever folder you want to share, and share it. IF its still giving you issues about permissions, under the security tab of the folder, make sure you give permissions to the user account you want to have access to it.

Alternately, you can open up the "run" box, type in "\\"computer name"\c$"

You should be prompted for a user ID and password. Type in the user ID and password of the admin account on the computer you are trying to access ( If the admin account has no password, create one and try again)

the command C$ will give you access to the entire C drive. the letter can be switched out to whatever drive letter you want access to.

Hope it helps.
