Desktop turns off. After being repaired.

Hello, I have a custom made gaming desktop I've had since 2012. Last week it began to randomly turn itself off ( As in shut down completely ) I didn't think much of it and kept resetting it. I finally hard a snap/crackle/popping noise and a burning smell, and then the computer would no longer turn on.

I took it to a repair shop where I was charged 40$ diagnostic fee, and was told the issue was a blown PSU. I paid another 45$ for a PSU and was told there was nothing else wrong.

I've had it home since this past Saturday, and it still is randomly turning off. The only difference it lasts longer in between shutoffs.

I have not called the guy back who fixed it, because I am hoping it will just resolve itself, but I have no idea why it continues to have this issue.

I've replaced the PSU power cable-and also plugged it into a wall outlet-and nothing has helped.

Thanks in advance.

What sized PSU was in there before and what sized PSU did they replace it with? What are your hardware specs?

550 WATT PSU both before and after. here are the specs.
Geforce gtx 460 video card. AMD phenom x6 1090t. 8GB of ram. MSI mobo.

windows 7 OS.

And as a reference point, my core temps are 82 degrees fahr.

The computer itself is a few years old, but it's perfect for my needs. I really only play WOW, and thus haven't found the need to upgrade. But my concern is one day this computer will just literally blow up, and I won't know the cause or be here when it happens.

But so far it's been fine all day....as I said, it's very unpredictable when it happens.

What is the exact model of power supply you have?

I don't know. I did not ask him about the new one he put in. But I do know it was a new one. Brand new? not sure, but new to this computer.

I'm reluctant to call him, because I don't want him to say it'll be another 40 bones to bring it back.

You should just be able to take the side panel off of the PC and read the sticker on the PSU.

May I ask if if you think it's still the PSU, even if it's a new one?

I'm trying to give more information. and I'll get that info soon. That requires unplugging everything and pulling it out.

Usually doesn't require unplugging anything. model number is stamped on the side of the power supply visible when removing the side of the case. If the power supply is a very cheap 550 watt unit then its under powering the video card. Doesn't matter if its brand new or not. $45 for a 550 watt psu is kinda worrying me.

Ok I can get that information for you. And yeah, thats what I paid. I honestly was just desperate to figure out what the cause was. All together it was 90 bucks.

Unfortunately that's the point where a lot of people will take advantage of you.

If you spent $90 for some crap unit to be installed then this guy is never worth knowing at all.
