Desktop Upgrade?

So I was helping my in laws clean out there garage today and found a ten year old Hp Pavilion XE783. It has a Intel Celeron 700 Mhz, 256 MB memory, 30 GB HDD and Intel GPU and yes it still runs. Now I am not looking for a beast computer because this will mainly be used for internet, office and maybe some light photo and music management. I am looking at putting some new life into it, I have found the memory that I plan on maxing out to 512 MB but what I am curious is it possible to put a more powerful CPU into it? Nothing crazy but a Celeron CPU that is at least 1 Ghz and if so what kind and I am looking for?

Here is some info I could find on it.

Now if this seems like a impossible task how hard would it be to install a more modern but cheap mobo for this computer? What kind would I be looking for as far as form factor? ATX, mid tower ATX?

Just trying to make a cheap family computer that can run a LXDE or xcfe Linux OS with some multi-tasking capability.

Thanks for any info guys.

According to the HP link you posted, the max processor that will work is the 700 mhz Celeron. In my opinion, I wouldn't be wasting any money on this old pc. Between not having enough memory to run xp efficiently and only a.Celeron processor, its gonna run pretty slow.

But I didn't think that the power of the cpu mattered as long as it is the correct cpu socket? Like I said I do not plan on building a power house computer but if I could upgrade to a 1.4 Ghz and 512 MB memory it will run a LXDE or a xcfe with no problem.

This computer is mainly for like I said my family computer to get online listen to music whatever they want to do.

Thats not true. With OEM computers back then they usually only used motherboards with a very limited cpu support and not very upgradeable. You are stuck with the 700 mhz celeron max.

Straight from the link you posted.

Base processor and speed
•Intel (R) Celeron 700 MHz processor (socket 370)
•Maximum HP supported replacement: Intel Celeron 700 MHz

Thanks for the answers, I didn't know about all that. I might just do a desktop build in the future.

Must say though that I am surprised for a Hp that it has lasted as long as it has. Puppy Linux is so light it runs from disc on there pretty responsive but I can't install it for some reason it won't let reformat the disc to ext 2,3 or 4. It just tells me error.
