Desktop Upgrade

I have a like, 5 year old Desktop PC, and i want to upgrade it since my laptop isn't (easily) upgradable.

I've been looking at Dabs.com (I'm from the UK) and found these, wondering what you guys thought, since from what i have read its a large, active, and nice community.
Motherboard
CPU
HDD
ODD
CPU Fan
Case Fan
Graphics card is the Ati Radeon X700 Pro, i am using this as its part of my old rig, and not too outdated and case is some random one I have lying around

All comments would be nice
Please bear in mind, that my budget is about £175.00 Thats about $300.00 The current £-$ Exchange rate is about $2-£1

MB you're choosing not support CPU ...
Where is your RAM? PSU? Case?
Is you GPU with PCI-E or APG?

Better save at least £400-500 for new computer.
Although £1 = US$2, don't forget you need to pay VAT...
By the way, I usually go to ebuyer as they usually cheaper.

Just give you some idea what you can get around £160 at ebuyer.com
AMD 3600x2 £45
Asus M2n-mx (onboard video) £39
Kington 2 x512MB DDR2 667 £29
Seagate 80GB SATAII £28
Samsung SH-S183 SATA DVD burner £21

That sounds like a realy nice build for the price, you can also get a case for £10 if you need one and keyboard and mice for under £10 and 2.1 speakers under £10 of ebuyer

Thanks for the large number of responses.

GENERAL, i posted the wrong link for CPU, i have amended my first post and will add a link here
CPU
Almost misposted my HDD
HDD

To Daisy
Both the CPU i accidentally put up and the new one work with the Mobo, the Mobo supports Intel Core 2 Duo.
RAM, Uncertain Need help deciding on this
PSU, Uncertain as to what this is. How embarassing
Case, As i said the old case for this rig, if needed for the mobo i'll get a new case, but i think the Mobo and the case are compatible
My GPU is PCI-E x4.
I realise to get a completely new rig would be more than this, but it is merely a large overhaul of a old rig.
All of Dabs.com prices include VAT. and I merely put up the £-$ thing because it says your supposed to post budgets in $.
And finally i have checked Ebuyer, while without VAT there prices are cheaper, Ebuyer doesn't display VAT in there prices (there main prices that is)

Thanks for the link Simon, I'll check it out

I dunno why not a 120mm case fan to be honest Wizle, was just looking at the fans available and it doesn't release much noise, Has (to my knowledge) a ok CFM & RPM and is quite cheap

To Daisy again
A AMD CPU currently is very considerably inferior to Intel (last i checked)
but i'll give ebuyer another chance

And thanks for the advice Taylormsj

EDIT: THANK YOU DAISY, Found the E4400, with reviews claiming to have tested it at 3.2+ghz, thats like .6ghz better than the fastest tested E6300. So another update to which processor, (found this on Ebuyer, so thought i'd thank dasiy, even though i will be buying it from Dabs.com)

PSU = Power Supply Unit

I wouldn't say AMD are considerably inferior to Intel at all. If you check various benchmarks, AMD are not far behind. If you want "bang for buck" then AMD are very good.

No matter what you buy now, it will outperform what you currently have anyway :)

Well, interesting Simon, AMD finally caught up did they? because jsut before Xmas AMD was way behind. and what you say about being better than what i have, yes thats very true.

If AMD have closed the gap somewhat I'll look into them.
Intel though always have run cooler though, so they can be overclocked more effectively, but if this too is out of date i'll seriously consider them.

I believe the general consensus is that if you intend doing hardcore graphics, video editing etc. then Intel have the edge.

As you can see from my sig I have an Athlon X2 4600+ (X2 = dual core) which replaced my Athlon 32bit 3200+ and it's more than quick enough for what I use my machine for. I could have bought a core 2 duo if I wanted, but I didn't.

To be honest, I think people are biased by whatever they own, so you'll hear Intel owners singing the praises of core 2 duo and telling you to avoid AMD, but there isn't actually anything wrong with AMD and never has been!

You need to look at what you intend to use your machine for and your budget. There's no point getting a certain Intel cpu just because it outperforms an AMD in some graphic intensive program when you're never going to use that program anyway.

If all you do is browse the net, email and use a word processor then it's pretty much irrelevant what you buy.

my intention is CPU & GPU intensive Gaming.
Also some graphics and video editing and compiling programs, so i thought that E4400 is quite a good idea, but the Athlon X2 4800 sounds quite nice

And cooling doesn't matter that much as i intend to get a very nice fan
