Desktop Upgrading questions.

I am looking into upgrading my HDD in the HP D530 CMT. I have not opened the computer yet, but I know it is PATA tech, and I am unsure of the ability to use SATA tech in this desktop.
Also, as I am looking into upgrading the Processor, is there anyway that someone out there can find a reliable source that provides the info as to what board, or at least the ports and processor socket that it has.

Your bus speed of the Mobo will determine what is the fastest CPU that can be used. Example 800 mhz or 1333 mhz, and I believe the list for your processors for your mobo is this

Tho not all of these may work, It gets you started in the right direction. The cpu inserted sets the bus speed automatically if it is one that the Mobo will handle


If you open it up and get the model number off of your motherboard I can do some "Better" reasearch on it and give you a more refined list of cpu's and the socket type. this is what I cam up with based off of the make and model of the computer tho

For upgrades. With the looks of it you can buy a P4 3.06GHZ Processor for it. It is a 4GB Max ram, but HP Reccomends only 2GB of DDR SDRAM.

See, what i was sayin is that this is my first desktop. I know the terms, but identifying them is beyond me.

Is the 3.06 HT P4 a fairly competent processor?? Or am i going to be looking into buying a newer Mobo to hold a core series?

I am running a DualCore Pentium 4 3.0GHZ with 2GB (soon to be upgraded to 4GB) But it works good for me which is running Maya and AutoCAD. 3D Design stuff. It all depends on what you are going to be using it for. If you are going to be using it for intense gaming, or really demanding software, or running multiple applicatations at once Expecting no lag..... I would say you are better off upgrading the Mobo. I know I am looking at an upgrade I just cant afford it right now. Out of the 27 Mobo's I have, this intel works best for me... Of course I dont have a mobo 64Bit compatable nor over Intel Pentium C processor lol. I would like the new Intel I7 Processor and about 24GB of ram on one of the EVGA Server Mobo's. But the cost for that alone is not worth what I do on the computer.

Looking at the Page you posted again I will try to simplify it alittle

The first 3 sections with the schematics of the desktops are just explaining what the Small Form Factor desktop, the Convertible Minitower, and the Ultra-slim Desktop look like. Those 3 schematics can also be used to compare and contrast.

The At A Glance section is telling you what features (Hardware, Software (OS)) they will support and or have in them from the factory.

The Standard Features - Select Models section explain how to read the Model number to Identify your computer and its specific compatabilities with Hardware, what kind of desk top it is ie; Small Form Factor desktop, Convertible Minitower, or Ultra-slim Desktop, as well as what software it came installed with ie; Microsoft office, Windows XP ect. It also tells you if it will support another harddrive or not and what removable storage devices it has.

The Standard Features - Custom Components section is pretty self explaitory with the x's in places that apply to that certian type of desktop, stuff you can customize or upgrade. The confusing part is the abbriviations. USDT (Ultra-slim Desktop) , SFF (Small Form Factor desktop), and CMT (Convertible Minitower).

The Standard Features Section is what comes standard From the factory in that type of desktop

The After-Market Options Section is about the products that you can get and install into your computer, as well as another list of what computer that product is compatable with.

The Memory section is about what the desktop is compatable with as well as configurations that will work with that desktop.

The Storage section is about what storage devices you can put into what bays and how many bays are available.

The Technical Specifications is pretty self explanitory, just a LOT of reading :(.

It seems that I have a Convertible Minitower.

As to what I am doing with it, I do school work and light gaming (18WOS, MOH: PA, the older (up to Generals) CNC). What I wanted to do was to upgrade to a processor that doesn't lag upon startup and when running several windows at once (word, Itunes, Google Chrome). The 2.53 I got just takes so freken long to get started, but once it does it runs ok.

Is there any way to find out what Motherboards are compatible with this system??

Hmm. The only thing I have found my p4 3.0GHz lags on so far is Photoshop CS4. But I believe once I upgrade to 4GB and a video card that will change :) So if you upgraded to the same specs I am almost sure that it will run allot better. The slow speeds on start up could have allot to do with the system processes that your computer has to go through. But more ram and faster cpu should help deal with that. You may want to think about a harddrive reformat and or going through the harddrive and clean it up. Use the disc clean up utility. Either way. I would push for a disc clean up before reformat. Finding drivers sucks unless you have the Factory CD that will put it back to an new out of the box reformat.

I did some searching about a Mobo upgrade but I have not found anything yet. I will keep searching and Post what I find when I do find something :) I would go about upgrading the Powersupply as well. But from what I have seen is that hp uses a specific Powersupply. I will do some more looking around on that as well. I have to let my GF on the computer now so she can quit screaming at me Lol. I will try to get back on tonight. :)

I have already cleaned the HDD. It has XP small business edition, to whick i dont have a CD to. Ill contact HP to see if I can get one.

So I am guessing that your best bet would be to go with a whole new setup.
Not real good news if you dont want to, or dont have the funds to, buy a new system But it is fun building one :)

so yes i should defiantly work. with the same heatsink and fan too!
The D530's support all Pentium 4 processors Socket 478 from 1.3GHz all the way to 3.46GHz Extreme Edition

So you could even go for a Intel Pentium 4 3.46GHz Extreme if you wanted to :D

ok, thanks man. I am unsure of getting an 3.46 ED. I know that I can get a 3.2 for around $15, so that is probably what I will get.

As far as the upgrading, I am awaiting the arrival of a 5.1 channel Sound card made by Rocketfish, and it uses the PCI adapter. It should be here sometime next week.

Also, I have completely disassembled the computer and shot 2 coats of primer, and 4 coats of Automotive Jet Black over it. Looks good along with the cable management.

Now, I was thinking of getting a stronger power supply for it. It has a 4 pin processor adapter, and 24 (i think) pin main adapter. Also needs 3 mole adapters and several SATA adapters for future work.
What supplies do y'all suggest??
 
I only have 2 SATA adapters on the mobo. (They only run at 1.5 GBPS). If I knew of a way to run more SATA plugs in it, then I'd get rid of all the PATA in it. I hate the ugly PATA cords that FU** UP the cable management in it.

I was looking for something at least 400 Watts. The one that is in it is 300 watts.
 
I have done a little more searching and by I found that 300W may be the max that is made for it. I am sure that someone else here knows a little more about it, and could help, but since it is such a non-standard power supply, meaning that power supply was made for certain HP's ond only HP (or compaq, same brand really), you will have to do some case modding to get another one (Standard PSU) to fit. Drilling new holes and such.
