Hi there, have just recieved a desktop from a friend who needs help. The desktop just won't turn on. It's completely dead.

They woke up one night (after having left the pc on) to hear it clicking and a strong burning smell.

I have opened up the pc and nothing visible is wrong.

The most I have managed to do is when connecting power to the machine, a faint clicking can be heard.

Any ideas anyone?

check were the power supply connects into the devices such as the mobo and hard drive. if there are burn marks you know its the psu. its most likley the psu anyway

Numerious things could be wrong.

Power Supply fried (or is frying)
Motherboard friying
a connector not connected all the way...

A bunch of things.

Give more info please?

yeah that would be a good thing to try. if you can manage remove the heatsink on the cpu and see if there are burn marks there. if they smelt burning, something had to have fried!
