Desperate help. PC freezing

All of a sudden my computer locked up and I could do nothing so I restarted my computer and when it started up again it still froze. I thought this may of been a small software fault, maybe a windows file corrupted so I performed a Windows repair on the hard drive using the windows CD but I still have the same problem. (I get to my desktop and can see the background but no icons). I have reseated my GPU, sound card and RAM and checked all case fans, motherboard fans and CPU fan. Also, I cant see anything burnt out.

What is the problem with it..?

Could be a virus or a faulty HDD. Any noises associated with the problems (ticking, louder than usual fans, etc.)?

Can you get into Safe Mode ok or do you have problems there too?

Did the repair install finish without any problems? If it did, you would tend to think it is less likely to be a hardware problem.

There doesnt seem to be any loud noise whatsoever and the computer loads up into safe mode fine. I may have done a windows update recently, could this be the cause of the problem?

The repair finished without any problems.

You could do a 'System Restore' in Safe Mode. Go back to a point before this happened. They just check over what updates you're going to get (to see if you can pick one that may have been the problem). If that makes sense?

Yeah, but I have no restore points even though system restore is enabled. I have tried disabling every startup item to see if it is a driver or piece of software that loads on startup that is the problem but even with everything disabled it still freezes.

Maybe a file was too corrupted for the repair to fix it? You may have to re-install.

You could try running a Linux Live CD for a while to see if it's a hardware problem.

I have chosen selective startup from the ms config utility and disabled everything and the computer loads up fine!

now do I just enable things one by one to see which is the problem?

Great news!

Pretty much, Yeah. Just make a list of the items, then as you enable them and they work, tick 'em off. Then you'll know which one(s) is cuasing the problem.

Go through(msconfig) and look at the names of the service/programs and enable the ones you want.

Ok I have disabled these items:

Process SYSTEM.INI File
Process WIN.INI File

I need to enable these again I am sure but will my comp freeze again?

Im still getting the freezing without enabling these items.. time to go for the last option.. format the drive!
