Desperatly Need New Computer Parts

Basically I have a computer from 2000. I need one that was created in the 21st century. It's an AMD Athlon K7, 800mHz. 128mb 100 mhz SDRAM.

I want to slowly upgrade this PC into a new one. Such as getting a new PSU(SuperFlower 550W TT-550SS?) and new motherboard with a 939 pin socket. And a modest AMD 64bit processor. 1GB RAM.

I want to buy as little as possible but still have my computer able to work. I mean I'd like to keep my 30GB HD, floppy, CD-RW, Keyboard, Mouse, etc. etc.

I also want this base setup to be around for a while and allow for upgrades. I just got done going through all the "101" things and skimmed over some stuff, and read stuff that rang a bell.

I also included a CPUz txt file with this so everyone knows what's goin on with my computer.

I need suggestions on what I should get. Mild gamer, School work, music, photo editing. I don't need a crazy system, but i'd like one that won't crash on me constantly and one that is competitive to today's standards.

are you on a set budget? how much will u be wiling to spend on all those stuff u needed.

if ur planning to get a new motherboard and stuff, might as well just get a new fresh one so u wont get all the bugs and stuff. then u can add ur hdd as a secondary one and ur ccd drives, keyboards etc..

i sont know how upgradeable that sounds i think i would go for new mobo cpu and ram in one hit so that you can make them all compatible

Yeah, that's what I was talkin about, getting the PSU, Mobo, CPU, and RAM first so that they all work. I have hdd, cdrw, and all that stuff. But I want to get the very most basic platform for upgrading in the future, and the cheapest I can get.

As for a price range, I'd like to get PSU, Mobo, CPU, and RAM for under $500. Is that possible and still get a nice machine? I see deals at BEST BUY that offer AMD 3000+ systems for like 500-600 with monitor, keyboard and some free printer or something like that.

I'd like to use my old case, but if I can't then oh well, it's hideous anyway, I have pictures of just about every component of my computer if there are compatibility questions. Plus that CPUz should clear up anything else. Thanks alot for the reply's guys.

Good PSU :)

Ok what's the budget? :)

Does anyone have a suggestion?
Whats the budget? :)

Thanks for the reply, how do those systems compare to this tower only system that Best Buy offers:

Compaq - Presario 3500+ Desktop SR1650NX
AMD Athlon™ 64 processor 3500+; DL DVD±RW/CD-RW and CD-ROM drives; 250GB hard drive; 1GB PC3200 DDR SDRAM; Windows XP Media Center 2005; 9-in-1 media reader; LightScribe labeling
Our Price: $679.99

And when you specified each system as either AGP or PCIE, is that just the Graphics port supported by the motherboard? And will those motherboards support old IDE interfaces, like my Hard Drive/CD/RW? Thanks again.

The specification i gave will definitively outperform that Compaq

Yes AGP/PCIE refers to the graphics interface used by the mobo and yes they support IDE devices

Why would it outperform it? Just better components? Better mobo? I need to justify this purchase to my girlfriend who is splitting the bill with me. Thanks again.

Well for starters, if you look at the specs I gave you vs the specs compaq/hp gives you ... i provide links for you to look into details about the parts etc and i provide PEXACT MODEL NUMBERS .... so you know what yer getting. As for the HP
1. Athlon64 3500 coudl refer to any of 4 processors (the one i picked being the best)
2. They dont tell you what motherboard you get nor the featureset it has and finding out is a very difficult and painful process (and when you do find out you'll se its a stripped down stock motherboard with very little featurewise -- why? because the less features hte less stuff that can break ,... and the fewer warranty claims)
3. No model name or make name on the optical drives ... there's good drives that last 10,000 discs and theire's crappy ones that last 500
4. There are no specs on teh RAM .. there's good stuff and bad stuff

:)

In short, better everything (and u can tailor the system to what you need and want -- not necesarily what you would be getting with the compaq)

thanks alot, I appreciate it.

I've got one more question, will either of those MoBo's/PSU's fit into my current case? I don't know the different styles, i've got pictures of my case, and mobo, but I can't remember, and I can't tell by the pics how many screws are holding it to the side wall of the case.

Would I be better off just getting a new $50-$100 case?

Oops, I didn't see that the power supply came with it's own case. That's great, I hate the way mine looks. Do power supply's usually come with their own case? Thanks.

Sometimes .. but most of the time, the PSUs that come with the cases are horrible. The one i picked out isnt spectacular or anything but it'll get the job done. For a list of what to look for in a PSU as well as some exaples, PSU 101. (if it was my system, i would buy the XClio PSU and get a cheap case)

Question about the core...(Venice). In your CPU 101 you had it listed at #2 for desirability among single core 939 socket users.
-The [512k] after Venice I assume is the L2 cache?
-Why is it listed #2 when one would think that a 1MB one would be faster, (i.e. Clawhammer ranked #4)?

I might have answered my own question. Is the 1MB L2 Cache on the Clawhammer inefficiently "crammed" onto the processor? Does that hinder the performance and make it actually slower than a Venice 512k? Or is it faster but at a cost of heat/efficiency etc?
