Detail vs. FPS?

Just out of boredom and curiosity, What do you prefer, overall detail and graphics or silky smooth frame rates? This is from and for people who can't necessarily afford both for some games.

Well it depends, if it is a hardcore FPS game, then fps is more important. But on RTS games, I'd go for graphics.

As long as the game isn't too laggy i would opt for detail.
