Detecting country by IP address

Hello,

Is it possible to detect the country someone is from by putting in they're IP address? so if you had a game server for instance you could enter the IP address you use to connect and it would tell you where the server was located, maybe there is a website that can do this, does anyone know one?

you can actually find out what state, and even some towns that people are in by there ip address.

Well you find out what states or town there ISP, Gateway, or Proxy sever is in. But then thats not always the state or town of the user

yeah you can find out more than enough info with just the ip address...it's pretty fun to exploit with your friends

true, but when i go to www.nearlygood.com, the banner on the right about half way down says "meet singles in your area!" and it says Dunbarton, NH (which is a very small town), weird to think about how much people can know about you just from your IP.

www.whois.net is a great little site. I found what building my GF's ISP is using in a certain city/state, and which FLOOR ther server/gateway is on that connects her. I'll have to see if mine is that detailed...

EDIT: well, not as in depth...but here is what it comes up with for the computer i am on now at school:
