Alright, Malwarebytes successfully installed. Updated. Scanned (I wasn't messing around; I chose the advanced scan option!). Took about an hour, but a lot of stuff was dug up & removed. I'll copy the scan log below for you:

Phase two completed

The on-line virus scan took hours to set up & complete, but no complaints; it seems to be really thorough.

A window titled "Your computer is infected" appeared at the end of the scan. One problem was detected. I'll post the log below:

We may have a breakthrough here!
After closing the online virus scan, there was an open window on my desktop - "Download complete. Updates for McAfee Virus Scan Plus are ready to be installed".

I responded saying I wanted the updates to be installed now...and it appeared to go through! The 30-day error was still there, but I rebooted and checked and now it was gone! :D

This looks good, but now - what do to about that infected file found by the online virus scan? Should I now run a McAfee scan in hopes it will be detected & zapped? Or use a different tool? And what to do about that infamous sys49 file?

I'm cautiously optimistic we will solve this soon! But I don't think we're out of the woods yet. While I'm waiting for your reply, I'm going to see if I can now update Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, and go online via Firefox.

By the way, I also got notice Service Pak 3 is now available for download from Microsoft. Know anything about that? If my other apps now work, should I try installing that right now?

If you have a fully updated SP2 then installing SP3 isn't gonna make a difference. All SP3 is, is a fully updated SP2. That file that kaspersky found was minor. The Malwarebyte's program deleted the really bad ones. You can try using other scanners like spybot and adaware or even Superantispyware to see if they catch anything. You can even do a scan from hijackthis and reply with a log file then we can see if your system is clean.

I successfully updated Spybot S&D and ran it for the first time in months! Great news!Who knows, maybe even ComboFix would work now!

Go into add/remove programs and uninstall anything that says "my websearch" and also viewpoint manager or viewpoint media player.

I ran McAfee Virus Scan earlier just for kicks. It hung up a few times, requiring me to hit the SKIP button, but when it finished, no problems were found - the one defect caught by the online scan was not picked up by McAfee.

It's slow, but I can also run Firefox now! So the news continues to be good.

Any reason to try running ComboFix again?
Anything still suspicious-looking in HijackThis?

John, I can't thank you enough for your input and interpretation of my log files. Thanks to you, my computer not only runs better, but I'm breathing a huge sigh of relief this frustrating issue appears to be behind me at last!
