I am anything but a techie, but I keep getting the same error when I attempt to load Mircrosoft XP Service Pack 3..."Device Installation Error"

Any ideas on how to overcome this and get the SP3 loaded?

I am running XP Home Edition, 2002, with SP 2 on it.

Does it say what device it is. You could try updating all your drivers before installing SP3. Could be a older driver is having a conflict with SP3.

Driver updates

I went to update the drivers for my Display and got the following error
"Windows could not load the installer for Display, contact your hardware vendor for support"

Might this be my baseline issue? Now is it a bad video card or corrupt driver?

I have a NVIDIA Ge Force 4MX4000. The system says it is operating fine. There is also a Intel (R) 82845G on this system which gets same errors if I check for updated drives there, the GE Force is the primary one working on this comp.

Is this a OEM computer like a Dell or something? What make and model? Has it got Intel onboard video plus you have a stand alone Nvidia Geforce 4 card?

Yes Dell Deminsions 2350 with XP Home, SP2. It came with the Intel (R) 82845G card, I upgraded it some 2 years ago with the NVIDIA Ge Force 4MX4000 card.

On another site i saw some folks were messign with the "desk.cpl" and copying it to their System32 folder who had similar error message, but they were messing direct with their vid cards. Just throwing stuff out...by the way appreciate your taking time to help me.

HUM! Did you disable the Intel onboard? Look in Add & Remove programs for the Intel onboards video drivers and uninstall them.

Have you installed Nvidia drivers for your nvidia card or is it just the windows drivers that installed when you put the card in?

OK I disabled the Intel from the Devices screen, I will now go in and uninstall instead. There is a NIVIDIA driver active, not just a windows one.
