Diagnosing laptop problem

I just got a new laptop. It is an Acer Aspire AS5742-7620.

It ran fine a few months ago, then just stopped turning on one day. All the software was working fine up to this point. My brother thinks it needs a new battery, but this is the same person who also told me to clear my dnscache on a regular basis, so I thought I'd come to you guys.

Can anyone guess what's going on?

I'm all but ready to buy a replacement battery on eBay, but would like to know if that's what you guys would do first. You guys are the experts.

If it's just a few months old I doubt the battery is dead. Does it work when plugged in? Can you turn it on without the battery while plugged in?

^ pretty much that. You should be able to remove the battery and power it through the wall adapter. If it boots and works normally when trying that then I'd consider a replacement battery. Otherwise it's something else.

Pretty sure you'd only need to replace the battery if it's not holding a charge or not booting when on the battery?

Are you using it on battery or plugged in? Try charging the battery - leave it plugged in for a few hours and then try.
