Diagnostic Help Please

My PC will not boot. Details follow:

I built the machine from scratch about 3 years ago, and it has been outstanding until 2 days ago.

When I power-up it appears all components are getting power. The front and rear case fans and lights all work properly. The processor, power supply and video card fans all run. The green power light on the motherboard lights. The green power light on the case lights and the red powercase processor activity light comes on, and STAYS on. My memory chips have activity LEDs and they do not light or flicker at all. I don't hear any processor/harddrive activity either.

The video monitor starts up, but only in power save mode, and is waiting for the PC to run. It goes dark after a while.

My problems started 2 days ago when I left it running unattended for a couple of hours. When I went back to use it, it was displaying the Windows desktop and the mouse cursor would not move. The machine was locked up and I turned off the power at the power strip to try for a re-boot. The next time I booted up, the machine ran a couple of minutes and locked up again. Now all I get is as explained above.

All virus, firewall, etc. is current and available.

Components are:
3D Aurora case
Enermax Noisetaker power supply
ASUS A8V-E SE motherboard
Western Digital Caviar SE 200Gb harddrive
AMD Athlon 64 x2 4100+ processor
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX display adapter
Corsair matched memory modules 2048 Mb
DVD and CD units are Sony
Sound Card is Creative SB Live!
OS is Windows XP with current updates

I welome all comments and advice.
Thank you,
Chuck
