hi this is my first time posting so im sorry if its lacking details or anything else. my friend has a hp desktop and recently her house got struck by lightning and the internet no longer worked they took it to best buy to get it fixed. best buy sent them away saying they herd a dial tone but the computer still wouldnt connect to the internet she says she went through the troubleshooting steps but nthing helped i know this isnt alot of information i havent seen the computer yet but if u could at least point me to the right direction in what questions to ask her or some steps to try or at least look up info that would be awsome thanks!!

it's possible that it's the wiring in the house that got fried, they should probably have an electrician come out and check things out

I wouldn't say it's impossible that that's the problem. What provider are they using?

Sounds like something in the PC got roasted by a lightning strike, either on the phone line or the power line. If the computer works fine otherwise, and a regular phone works okay on the line (plug it in and try making a call), then I would say your modem got a surge big enough to destroy it.

^^^ beat me to it, does the modem have an input for the phone line, and an output for a phone? If so can you get a dial tone if a phone is plugged in to the modem's output?
