A few years ago when i had dial up internet, some one from a different country got my number and called up there country for 24 hours and ran up a massive 900 pounds bill, at the time my parents werent best pleased and neither was 1. i had a firewall but it still happened! can this happen with broadband? as i was thinking about it just today and i wouldnt like it to happen again. i have AVG and spyware docotor ad just a windows firewall, do i need a better firewall and how can i detect such behaviour if someone had entered my system? thanks!!!

Becouse with dial-up you dial a number, and that dialer (software that changes the number) must have changed the number and dialed it. With broadband you don't dial so nothing to worry about.
