Did a restore and lost everything

Ok so I have a computer where some Woman did a restore on her computer (thinking she had a virus) and it took her back to when she first bought the computer in time. Now I'm not sure if undoing the restore will bring everything back? Is there a program that will find and bring those files and programs back?

i mean...if you know what you are doing and have a lot of time im sure some kind of program will help you...but that could take hours or days....

It's pretty much gone dude

yes try an un-deleting program. i used some. don't remember the name but they work. they're free too. you should recover most things assuming she didn't overwrite them with new files.

It's easy and it's possible.
Go to Accessories-> System Tools-> System restore and then click on Undo my last Restoration.

By the sound of it, he did a full system restore which restores the machine to factory defaults, which probably means that his/her HD was formatted and great deal of files written over by the original image.

Ima say there's very little chance of recovery, but some programs might be able of doing it. Though I'd probably take the HD out and restore the stuff using some other computer, as windows - and installation of a recovery program - may well wipe out whatever there is to recover.

No it doesn't matter. A woman did not reformat the computer but just made a System Restore and that is easily undone. I am quite sure in what I'm talking about

I thought when u did a restore it didnt delete ur documents anyway, only programs n stuff like that.

@GM - That's weird... I did a system restore on my Compaq laptop, and it wiped EVERYTHING off the HD. I'm not talking about the system restore feature of windows, and it sounds like the OP isn't either, as the normal system restore feature of windows doesn't touch your personal files.

...or does "system restore" on some computers simple restore the system files? That'd be something I've never heard of.

what the woman did was used the hidden partition to restore the default conditions as the time she bought the laptop. nowadays laptops have the recovery partition instead of the recovery/windows cd used to re-install/recover the OS. there would be 2 features. one is to restore to factory conditions - she used this. this is the equivalent to the reformat/reinstall method. the other is to "recover" all programs - she should have used this. this is equivalent to the recover method.

it's not the same as rolling back using the system restore feature as that feature doesn't touch saved files.

i'm quite confident she can/may get some files back using a file recovery program. the feature she used was intended to make the laptop back to factory conditions. it would not be necessary to delete all files and make it unrecoverable by re=writing all sectors with 0's as with a file shredder program .

to the op please tell us if using a file recovery program worked.
