Did I mess up my new mobo

As I wait on my new Video Card PCI-E I read over the instructions again and remember when i was installing the processor the first time I set it in I had not removed the plastic protective cover, I realized when the processor was not fitting in corectly and took it back out and found the plastic cover

Could this have damaged the mobo or processor even though I did not press down very hard when trying to install it? The MOBO comes with a quick guide installation and also another guide and a book, the quick guide did not explain this very well, and although I know it now, could have done the damage already.

Is there any way to tell if the processor and Mobo are working corectly, the fans, heatsink, drives all seem to work fine but not sure if that is controlled by the processor and mobo or not?

If I did mess the mobo up, would the processor still be ok, or would putting the processor on a damaged mobo damage it too. I never touched the bottom side of the processor, but the plastic cover did touch the mobo area where the processor goes.

If I did I will really feel like a dumb a$$

if you didnt press down on it too much i dont think it shud be broken, so u took off the plastic cover and put the cpu back in right, well does your computer turn on, good way to tell?

No, I noticed when I first started to close it back up, the locking lever, I realized something was not right and that for it to close would have to press way too hard.

The computer has not booted yet, had the wrong video card, had a PCI instead of a PCI Express, so when I turned PC on, nothing on monitor so have no clue what was going on. The new PCI-E card will be here tomorrow.

You can start a computer with a PCI video card if you have a PCI slot that is, just go into your bios and change it.

as long as you dont get thermal grease on your motherboard (this will short it out, since most 10% silver thermal grease is extremly conductive), or you dont bend the gold pins (yes...there 90-100% gold) you should be fine.

Cant do that without being able to see the monitor, remember the monitor is blank.

if the monitor is blank one of the following MUST be true.

resisters in the mobo are SHOT (bad)

memory isnt seated into the DIMM correctly

video card isnt snug into the agp or pci slot

the keyboard is pluged into the mouse port, and the mouse is pluged into the keyboard port, sometimes people mix them up, and since the POST test cant detect a keyboard, the system dosent start, try it out, its pretty funny.

processor isnt inserted into the ZIF correctly

monitor defect, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIX, high voltage exist in monitors for a LONG time, even after unpluged for 20 years, the capasitors have large loads of current that will take your arm off, no bs, so get another monitor.

Since I know the monitor is good, I will start eliminating the other things when I get home tonight. Thanks for the detailed List.

np, get back to us asap, i'll check back here in a while.

To be honest at this point I will be relieved if at least the processor is ok, I know I aligned it right but if I had messed something up before removing that plastic cover then put the processor on the mobo and something didnt lign up right, probably could have messed up both processor and Mobo

Since this has happened I have even found movies online to watch about installing processors, and you know none of them show to remove the plastic piece. Now that I know its there its a no brainer, but for someone who has never held or seen a processor the quick reference guide was not the best piece of instruction to look at.

I guess if this is the worse mistake I ever make then I will survive

PCI Express Video card is all it took, and some changes in the bios and it is loading windows now :D . What a relief, I was figuring on buying a new mobo and processor. I have learned a lot and thanks for all the help.

There *are* safe ways of dealing with those capacitors ya know ;)

wow...is a monitor really that dangerous?
Hell ya

In either case, we're getting off topic
