Did I ruin my CPU?

Yesterday I revcieved my new HSF in the mail, the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro. So I take off the original AMD cooler and remove all paste from it using que tips and rubbing alcohol. This is where I think I may have messed up: I was kind of excited to see how the Freezer did that I don't think I waited long enough for the alcohol to dry (waited about 5 minutes max). So I hook everything up and press the switch and nothing displays on the screen and I get multiple long beeps from my system speaker. Do you think that my CPU is fried? I really hope it isn't cause it's like throwing $150 out the window and taking another sum of money to get another.

PS: I took it out again and cleaned it and let it dry overnight, and the same thing happened after I waited for it to dry that long.
 
remove all things like, RAM, CPU, G-card, and PCI stuff and give it all a good BLOW ! Then put everything back in and try again. If you can remove the CPU from the socket and just blow down on it but make sure u dont get nothing in it. Then apply new HS compound and put the HS back on.
 
Im not sure if it will work, but what Brent does is he soaks it in isopropyl alcohol for a little while, then takes a blow dryer to it.

Also clean out the socket on the motherboard with air.

The motherboard tests the computers CPU, Video Card and RAM during POST. If it's making long beeps than it means something is malfunctioning, and since he said he might not have let it dry completly, most likely it's the CPU.
 
Nothing has dust in it so it's not a dust problem. I took the CPU out and turned the computer on and no beeps came at all. It's only when I have the CPU in that it beeps.

Well if i remember correctly from computer repair, the CPU is the first part thats tested. And if you take it out then it may not beep at all.

I said you should get an air duster to spray any alcohol out of the socket.

Did you try doing what i sugessted with the cpu?
 
If it beeps the CPU is working, at least partially. Since you are getting no display I'd check the video card first, if you have a spare try that.
 
resit the memory. just take it out and put it back in.
if that doesn't work, try doing the same for video card and pci devices.

also try unplugging USB devices... that happened with my uncles comp one of his USB ports went bad for some reason lol
if you waited 5 minutes for it to dry then thats plenty of time.
what percent rubbing alcohol did you use? 90% or higher is suggested... 70% is worse because its 30% water... takes longer to dry...
either way, it shouldn't even take 5 minutes to dry, i mostly wipe it off and it evaporated almost instantly.

but yea, resit some parts and get back to us.
also, are you overclocked? i find sometimes if i set my memory timings too tight it'll beep at me lol

If that's the case, then is there a solution to make it fully functional?

I really don't think it's any other parts, but I can try that.
 
yea, you never know until you eliminate all possibility...
i mean its worth testing anything if your system wont boot lol.
normally if the system beeps though somethings plugged in loose or unevenly.
if worst comes to worse then just resit the cpu.. you can't rule anything out... until well, you've ruled it out you know. lol
i mean.. computers are sensitive.
static is also something to be careful of.

basically i just take my socks off, stay away from blankets + rugs.. and always touch the computer case or power supply before you touch a computer part.
btw im jealous of your laptop lol... I WANT IT!
grr.. im gonna buy an HP asap. lol gotta save a bit of money though.
i probably have enough but i want better stuff lol

I'll definitely try that, but I have a feeling that the CPU alone is the issue. If it is then I will have to get a new one.
 
yea.. btw if the system beeps, that doesnt mean the cpu is working.
the same thing happened to me before...
just take ram and other devices out and put them back in... it'll take two mins...
if that doesn't work then resit the cpu.. its a pain but hey, if thats what it takes. lol
 
on this occasion.... what do i do if i want to remove the old thermal paste it's propably dry?
 
rubbing alcohol.. preferably a higher percentage.
and a Q-tip or some coffee filters. something lint-less...
not a towel, maybe some napkins.
i use coffee filters to be safe.

to be literal if its thermal paste it won't allow you to remove the heatsink.
AS5, a thermal compound, isn't really a paste per say.

I talked to my computer repair teacher and he said to take the RAM and video card out and put them back in also, so I'm getting a little more hopeful that doing that may work.

It would seem unlikely that it's a video card problem, since he never even touched the video card. But possible since he put a damaged cpu in, it somehow effected the video card... I cant really say for sure, we just have to wait for him to try it out.
 
well if the system is beeping, he needs to resit something.
resit the ram... then if it doesnt boot, resit the video card. if this doesnt work try it once more to make sure and then if it still doesnt boot, resit the cpu.
make sure to unplug the power supply, wouldn't want to zap yourself, or a computer part.
dont wear socks and stay away from rugs! lol static electricity = lose.

Well he has a wood floor, so thats not a problem.

But when i build a computer, im kneeling down on a carpet floor, wearing socks, the computers on my bed, and im not wearing an anti-static wriststrap. All i do is touch the side of the case whenever i move around to get rid of the static build up.
