Did my SSD seriously just die?

Why don't you spend the $5 on a proper 2.5" to 3.5" adapter plate. Seriously... it's not even like an obstacle compared to the other stupid things that are happening to your computer.

Duct tape.

SSD's weigh almost nothing. I've actually strapped them down with duct tape before. I'd prefer a cheap mounting solution than literally wasting an SSD and not using it at all.

Installing an OS onto a hotswap space is probably a bad idea, if not impossible even. Never tried it.
