For some reason my laptop (Gateway Solo) wouldn't register windows XP over the net, so my deadline expired and now every time I try and log on it gives me the error code 0X80004005 and says "a problem is preventing Windoes from properly checking the license" and it sends me back to the log on screen. any help would be awesome, thanks.

call microsoft and tell them the best sob story you can, they should help you register it in their database and get you unlocked.

You can and should call Microsoft but If it where me I'd not want to waste my time on hold with the big wigs so I'd reinstall windows and try to register again :).

wait, theres a deadline for not registering? How long is it?

It's 30 days.

I am not sure if Microsoft are going to do you any good, I think you should re-install windows and go register your product, actually it's not registration, it's activation. After the 30 days, your computer is locked and I don't think that even Microsoft will help you unlock it or else they will be telling clients how to illegally hack the windows copy after the 30 days pass and the windows activation expires.

Take my advice and re-install windows and then activate the windows copy through the internet and if you failed, call microsoft and they will give you a code to activate it manually.

If it's retail, they'll let you activate the same copy only twice, after that you'll have to call them. :(

I remember having to activate my fiances home version of WinXP about 4 times before I did somthing about that and Never had a problem doing so.
