Difference between PC2-4200 and PC-4200 RAM...

I want to upgrade my RAM to 2 gigs (from 1) and my computer currently has 2 sticks of 512mb DDR2 PC 4200 memory. On newegg, PC 4200 is substantially more expensive for 2 gigs ($304 with only one option) as opposed to PC2, which is around $125-$170 for two one gig sticks. What is the difference and will PC2 fit in my motherboard?

Thanks.

What motherboard do you have?

PC2-4200 is low end DDR2 while PC-4200 is high end DDR which is the reason for the price difference. Only 1 type will work in your board, even if you have a board that supports DDR and DDR2 you can only use 1 type at a time.

This is the model of my motherboard:

ABIT AA8XE 925XE MB Motherboard

Assuming it does support PC2, I really dont have enough money to shell out $300 for 2 gigs of RAM. How much of a performance difference between the two would I see?

Is there any way of telling how many slots there are on my motherboard for RAM? I can't find anything and if it is cheaper/of better quality I would like to just add another gig of the same type of RAM I have now if possible.

Most motherboards have 4 slots for ram.
