difference between Pentium D and Core 2 Duo

X2 and Core2 Duo are rivals, but not the same...not really sure about performance characteristics of either. X2s are cheaper, but - best to my knowledge - generally underperform similarly clocked c2ds in most applications.

If I'm wrong, gimme some real evidence to chew up!

X2's are about 30% less efficient that core 2 duo's, clock for clock, according to the benchmarks I've gandered at. Shorter pipes, higher IPC, a generally superior core architecture.

Well, whoever made the analogy first, kudos, They're both very easy for non-computer folks to understand.

They're underperforming powerhogs that only outperform bar heaters. However, they still lag behind more powerful Central Heating systems that...

Not looking to start anything, but my D 940 is Idling at 31*C right now. Lower performance than a C2D, but relatively cool if you know what you're doing.

yeah truth is i believe that they are only that hot because of their clock, if you were to use a C2D at the same clock i'd bet that they have around the same temperature, mine is clocked to 2.9ghz right now and it's at 32C

Yes, Pentium Dual-Core & C2D are practically the same, pentiums come with less cache and are underclocked. Pentium Dual-Core is a good processor - they're higly overclockable and most of the time only significantly underperform similarly clocked C2D's in heavy multimedia applications and such because of their smaller cache.

EDIT:
Actually I'm not sure if Pentium Dual-Cores are based on Core2 or the older Core architecture...either way, what I just said still holds true.

Pentium Dualies are based on the Core2 Conroe arch.

Yeah, Overclocker's dream chip, very inexpensive, very overclockable.
